What is AMD?

Answering Machine Detection

Answering Machine Detection (AMD) is technology used in outbound contact centers to determine whether a live person or answering machine/voicemail has answered a call. AMD analyzes audio patterns in the first few seconds of a connection to make this determination, allowing dialers to route live answers to agents while handling voicemails differently.

How AMD Works

AMD systems analyze audio characteristics to distinguish live answers from voicemails:

  • Speech patterns — Live greetings are typically shorter
  • Silence detection — Voicemail has specific pause patterns
  • Audio frequency — Machine recordings have different characteristics
  • Beep detection — Identifying the voicemail beep

AMD Accuracy Trade-offs

AMD must balance accuracy vs. speed. Faster detection means occasional false positives (hanging up on live people). More accurate detection means longer delays before connecting. Most systems achieve 95-97% accuracy with acceptable delay.
